Georgia Woman Sues Carnival Cruise Line After Slipping on Wet Steps Near Hot Tub on Carnival Glory
Vontresa Roberts, a Georgia resident, has filed a personal injury lawsuit against Carnival Corporation in the Southern District of Florida. Filed under Case No. 1:25-cv-24450-KMM, the lawsuit alleges that Roberts suffered serious injuries after slipping on dangerously wet and slippery steps near a jacuzzi in the adults-only Serenity Retreat area aboard the Carnival Glory on October 29, 2024.
Cruise Passenger Injured While Exiting Hot Tub at Serenity Deck on Carnival Glory
According to the complaint, Roberts was using one of the two jacuzzis located in the Serenity area on Deck 14 of the Carnival Glory. As she attempted to exit the hot tub, she slipped on wet and slick flooring surrounding the steps and fell, suffering significant injuries. The area, which is open-air and exposed to the elements, allegedly becomes dangerously slippery due to rain, condensation, and water tracked from nearby showers and the hot tub itself.
The lawsuit claims that Carnival failed to provide proper drainage, non-skid surfacing, or sufficient handholds for safe access and egress from the jacuzzi. The steps were allegedly small and steep, exacerbating the danger, particularly for wet and barefoot passengers.
Carnival Accused of Ignoring Repeated Slip and Fall Incidents Near Jacuzzi on Conquest-Class Ships
Roberts’ legal team contends that Carnival had both actual and constructive knowledge of the hazardous condition. The complaint cites at least four previous lawsuits filed against Carnival involving similar incidents on the Carnival Glory, including Anthony v. Carnival, Fazande v. Carnival, Blue v. Carnival, and Michalski v. Carnival, each of which involved passengers slipping on wet flooring near hot tubs.
Beyond the Glory, the lawsuit references numerous similar slip and fall incidents aboard other Conquest-class vessels—including the Carnival Valor, Liberty, Freedom, and Conquest—all of which share the same jacuzzi layout and flooring materials. According to Roberts, Carnival failed to act on this fleetwide safety hazard despite extensive notice.
Complaint Details Defective Deck Surface, Inadequate Warnings, and Failed Maintenance
The lawsuit alleges that Carnival’s flooring material in the jacuzzi area fails basic safety standards, including industry-recognized coefficient of friction tests. Although Carnival placed a few small caution signs and limited non-skid treads near the hot tubs, the complaint argues that these measures were insufficient and not commensurate with the known danger.
Roberts further alleges that Carnival intentionally downplays the volume of slip and fall incidents by narrowly defining reportable events in internal documents. As a result, hundreds—if not thousands—of slips in the same area allegedly go unreported or unrecorded, allowing Carnival to continue using unsafe flooring without implementing corrective changes.
The hot tub’s design is also criticized in the complaint for its high walls and lack of appropriate handholds, making it difficult to enter or exit safely, particularly for older passengers or those with mobility challenges.
Plaintiff Seeks Compensation for Permanent Injuries, Medical Expenses, and Loss of Cruise Enjoyment
Roberts brings three counts of negligence against Carnival: negligent failure to warn, negligent failure to maintain, and general negligence. She alleges that Carnival failed in its duty to provide passengers with a reasonably safe environment and ignored numerous red flags about the jacuzzi area’s design and maintenance.
As a result of the fall, Roberts claims she sustained permanent injuries, physical pain, mental anguish, lost wages, and diminished earning capacity. She also seeks compensation for medical treatment and the lost value of her cruise vacation.
