Michigan Passenger Sues Princess Cruise Lines Over Elevator Door Malfunction on Grand Princess
A Michigan resident has filed a maritime personal injury lawsuit in the Southern District of Florida against Princess Cruise Lines, Ltd. after suffering serious injuries caused by a malfunctioning elevator door aboard the Grand Princess. The complaint, filed May 12, 2025, is styled Bowman v. Princess Cruise Lines, Ltd., Case No. 1:25-cv-22184-RAR.
Elevator Door Malfunction Leads to Multiple Passenger Injuries on Grand Princess
According to the complaint, on August 9, 2024, the plaintiff attempted to exit an elevator aboard the Grand Princess when the doors malfunctioned and forcefully struck his body, resulting in severe injuries. The lawsuit alleges that immediately following the incident, a ship security guard admitted, “we need to fix that stupid elevator,” indicating prior knowledge of the defect.
The plaintiff also learned that several other passengers had recently been injured by the same elevator, including one who suffered a broken hand, another who sustained a broken foot, and a third who was struck by the doors. At least one couple had submitted a formal complaint to Princess Cruise Lines before the plaintiff’s injury, further evidencing the company’s notice of the ongoing malfunction.
Lawsuit Alleges Negligent Failure to Repair Defective Elevator
The complaint asserts that Princess Cruise Lines was on notice of the elevator’s repeated malfunctions through prior incidents, passenger complaints, and maintenance reports but failed to take reasonable steps to repair the elevator or remove it from service. The plaintiff alleges this negligent failure directly led to his injuries.
Damages claimed include pain and suffering, loss of earnings, hospital and medical expenses, mental anguish, embarrassment, and loss of enjoyment of life.
Cruise Line Liability and Passenger Elevator Safety
This lawsuit highlights the critical importance of cruise lines promptly addressing known maintenance issues, especially those involving passenger elevators. The outcome of this case may impact industry protocols for reporting, investigating, and correcting hazardous conditions on board.
